A Jamaican, who was found to be living illegally in Bermuda for the past 10 years, has been deported by the
authorities. The man, who was not named, was escorted back to Jamaica Monday by immigration officials. The deportation is part of a "zero tolerance" approach aimed at ridding the island of foreigners working in Bermuda without a permit. Minister of Labour and Home Affairs David Burch said the man was caught last weekend and that a second deportation was on the cards. Mr. Burch said the Government had information on a man who has lived on the island illegally for 20 years and he warned the unnamed individual to leave, before he is discovered and sent packing. The move follows an amnesty announced by Mr. Burch in September, which gave visitors who had overstayed their time and in many instances were working illegally, until October 31 to leave the island of their own accord. |
