In Grenada,
the Government has introduced new penalties for persons caught removing sand,
stone or gravel from the nation's beaches. Environment Minister Joseph Gilbert, in presenting changes to the Beach Protection Act said the new law would give the police the power to seize vehicles used to commit such acts. He said persons found guilty would face fines not exceeding five thousand US dollars, or a term of imprisonment not exceeding three years. Former Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell welcomed the initiative, but he said the authorities should brace for those who would want to test the system. |
