Bruce Golding has issued a stern warning to merchants and retailers who have
been slow in passing on food price reductions to consumers. Mr. Golding says the authorities will be intensifying their monitoring of prices. He also announced that price lists will soon be published to inform shoppers of the locations with the best deals. "Minister Samuda advised me that not only is the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) constantly monitoring prices but the CAC is going to stat prices at selected outlets so that consumers can be aware, make informed decisions as to where to spend there money ... we're going to insist that those prices be published on a weekly basis," he said. Growth in some sectors And Mr. Golding also announced that critical areas of the economy have recorded marginal improvement despite the worsening global economic crisis. The manufacturing and bauxite sectors reportedly saw growth during the July to September quarter. According to Mr. Golding, his administration is looking at initiatives to keep these sectors afloat amidst the global slowdown. "The agricultural sector had just started to recovery from Hurricane Ivan when it was clobbered again by Gustav but it is rebounding and Minister Tufton is working hard ... the bauxite and alumina sector, which had declined for five successive quarters, showed a 6% increase in the July to September quarter ... we have challenges, yes, but we're working with our partners in the bauxite industry," he said.. The Prime Minister was addressing the Jamaica Labour Party's annual conference on Sunday. |
