Jamaica's
boxing legend Mike McCullum topped the list of three Jamaican sporting
personalities who were honoured at the first ever Caribbean Awards Sports Icons
ceremony held Friday at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.The 1984 WBA junior middleweight world champion was awarded for his success in the sport over the years, the second Jamaican to win on the night was current sports journalist Lloyd "lindy" Delapenha in the category for football. Track and field star Veronica Campbell-Brown, who won back to back gold medals in the 200 metres at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, was the other Jamaican winner. Trinidad and Tobago took two awards in netball and sports administration. While, FIFA Vice President and Concacaf boss Austin 'jack" Warner took the sports administrator award. Barbadian Garfield Sobers who once held the record for highest test score of 365 runs won for cricket. The male track and field award went to Cuba's Alberto Juantorena who won the 400 and 800 metres at the 1976 Olympics in Montréal Canada. Jamaica's Beijing champions Shelly Ann Frazer and Usain Bolt were given awards for their exploits at the 2008 games. |
