The Ministry of Health in Guyana
on Saturday ordered the recall of all contaminated milk manufactured in China and
imported illegally into the country. In a statement, the ministry issued a recall for a product sold as ‘Milky Evaporated Milk', a product manufactured in China and one which has been identified as contaminated with melamine. Melamine is an industrial chemical that can damage to the bladder and kidneys. It is used to manufacture counter tops, kitchen utensils, chalkboards, fabrics and glues. Officials said the dairy product was slipped into the country by two local unregistered importers through Suriname. Wholesalers and retailers are requested to surrender any milk products containing milk derived ingredients manufactured in China to the Guyanese Food and Drug Department. In China, the chemical has been discovered in baby formula manufactured by 22 companies and has been blamed for killing four babies. Thousands fell ill after consuming contaminated products. |
