A number of the nation's Beijing Olympians including
200 meter gold medalist Veronica Campbell Brown and 100 meter silver medalist
Kerron Stewart were expected in the island Thursday for the one week Olympic
celebrations which begin Friday.
The athletes are being flown in by the government from Florida and will be staying at a Kingston hotel. The celebrations will begin with a motorcade from the Harbour View Round-about starting at 11am. The athletes will later attend a reception in their honour-Dining with the Stars under the Stars at the Strawberry Hill Hotel. Kendal Minter renowned Attorney at law and Director at Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyers Association will be the guest speaker. The dinner aims to raise funds for the 2009 programme of the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association. Jamaica won 6 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze at the Games of the 29th Olympiad in Beijing. Meanwhile, Shelly Ann Frazier, Kerron Stewart and Sherone Simpson who made a clean sweep of the 100 meters at the Beijing Olympics will receive one of the snazzy, 125 horsepower Suzuki swift sport cars from Stewart's Automotive. The total value of the three vehicles would normally be just under $6.88 million, but the government has agreed to a duty concession which would reduce the cost of each. Stewart' Auto is also offering three years of scheduled service for the vehicles and ICWI has agreed to partner with Stewart's Auto to provide complimentary comprehensive insurance coverage for one year for each vehicle. In the meantime, Utech's MVP members of Jamaica's delegation to the Beijing Olympics were honoured at a welcome home celebration hosted by the university Thursday. The athletes including Shelly Ann Frazier, Melaine Walker, Sherika Williams, Asafa Powell, Michael Frater and Nesta Carter traveled in a open back trailer during the float parade from the main gate to the Alfred Sangster auditorium where a presentation ceremony was staged. Sherone Simpson who is recovering from a surgery also took part in the parade. |
