Caribbean leaders have
expressed concern at the United Nations that the global financial turmoil will
make it harder to meet key development goals. Suriname's president Ronald Venetiann told the General Assembly his country was making progress on achieving some of the UN-set goals, including poverty reduction. But he said the food, fuel and financial crises would make it harder to keep up the pace. The Dominican Republic president Leonel Fernandez hit out at unregulated speculation in the sale of oil and food, saying the world does not aspire to be a gambling den. The Cuban vice president, Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, blamed irrational consumption, strong speculation and imperial war adventures for the crisis. |
