Image  The local swimming fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of a member of the national team.

Matthew Hylton, 18, collapsed during a training session at the YMCA pool in St. Andrew Thursday evening.

John Eyre, President of the Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica, says Matthew later died while undergoing treatment at hospital.

"it was the first day of training for the Christmas term, light training, and in the middle of the training, he developed some sort of medical problem ... we're not sure what exactly happened but he was rushed to the hospital where the doctors tried to revive him but unfortunately they were unable to do so," he said.

Mr. Eyre expressed condolences to Matthew's family and said everyone in the swimming community is devastated.

He said Matthew was the first student from a primary school to come through the system and make it to the national swimming team.

Matthew, who was a student of Ardenne High School, was the son of Angella Robinson, a former employee of the RJR Communications Group.
