CARICOM chairman and Antiguan Prime Minister Baldwin
Spencer is hoping that regional leaders will emerge from their September 10
meeting with a clear position on the Economic Partnership Agreement between Europe and CARIFORUM countries.Regional leaders should have signed the trade deal on Tuesday but some countries expressed reservations, prompting Barbados prime minister David Thompson to request a meeting to discuss the matter. Guyana has been at the forefront in opposing the initiative. Guyana's president Bharrat Jagdeo has said the region will be left with a bad deal if countries sign. St Lucia and Grenada have also expressed reservations. The EPA will replace the current preferential trade arrangements between the region and Europe. |
