One of the
unions representing workers at Air Jamaica is contending that the $300
million to be paid to American Airlines under a controversial deal should instead
be channelled to the cash-strapped national airline. The National Workers Union (NWU) said it is unfair that Jamaica is helping to finance an air carrier owned by a developed country while its own airline is floundering. "American Airlines is the national airline of one of the most powerful countries, America and why would a third world country want to finance their national airline flying to our country when our national airline, which is one of our biggest assets has never been capitalized on. Secondly, there are many needs presently at the national airline that US$4.5 million will take care of ... we have serious difficulty with that," said Granville Valentine, NWU Vice President. |
