A Jamaican author is urging the Education Ministry to
place more emphasis on sport in schools. Author of "Keeping Jamaica's Sport on Track" Carole Beckford said the Ministry needs to pump more money into training for resource persons to support athletics at the school level. Ms Beckford said Physical Education (PE) too often falls victim in the struggle most schools face in balancing the books. "There are some basics (that are taught in PE) ... we have seen especially in our team sports, a footballer catches the ball on his left and can't do a basic pivot to pass the ball to the person on his or her right ... those are things you learn in PE classes. According ot Ms Beckfor there is only one PE officer for the island and over 160 schools. These schools, however, do have PE teachers. "Why do we have mathematics teachers in abundance," she asked. Ms Beckford said with the matter of auxiliary fees which have been bantered about in the spotlight recently, the schools must have a little more leeway as it regards Physical Education perforation. "When they are cutting budgets, the PE budget gets cut ... but they jump on the band wagon when the schools do well," she said. |
