Trade union
officials have called a special meeting to discuss the decision by the Ministry
of Finance to withdraw tenders for the multi-billion dollar public sector
health scheme. The Ministry announced the withdrawal last week in the wake of news that Sagicor Life Jamaica had acquired the group health insurance portfolio of Blue Cross Jamaica Limited. Both companies were eyeing the lucrative contract to manage the Government health insurance scheme. President of the Jamaica Civil Service Association Wayne Jones said this has far reaching implications for the future management of the scheme. He told RJR's Financial Report that officials of trade unions which represent public sector workers could meet as early as this week to discuss the development. "We became aware of the withdrawal of the tender and at this point in time, I've had some discussions with representatives from the Monitoring Committee and they are unable to say why there has been a withdrawal," said Mr. Jones. |
