Jamaicans to take over the Olympic track on Thursday PDF Print

Asafa Powell. Jamaica's main hope for medal success 29th Olympic Games in Beijing, China begin on Thursday evening with the start of the track and field competition.

The 52 member contingent will be seeking to add its overall 43 medals in track and field as only cyclist David Weller with a bronze at the 1980 games in Moscow has tasted success outside of track and field for Jamaica.

The Jamaicans should add to the seven gold, 21 silver and 15 bronze won in the individual and relay sprint events on the track at the Olympics.

Shot putter Dorian Scott will be the first in action when he competes in the qualification rounds.

The heats of the men's 100 metres get underway at approximately 8:45 local time with Usain Bolt running in Heat One, Asafa Powell in Heat 2, Michael Frater in Heat Four and American Tyson Gay in Heat Five.

The second round of the men's 100 metres will be contested Friday morning at 6:45.

Usain Bolt.  The semi finals will be contested Saturday morning at 7:05 and the final will be run 9:30 also on Saturday morning local time.

The heats of the 400 meter hurdles will also take place on the opening day of track and field.

Four time national champion Danny McFarlane, Markino Buckley and Isa Phillips will seek to progress.

Kenia Sinclair will also see action in the women's 800 meters while Madrea Hyman, who has recovered from a calf injury and Korene Hinds will line up in the heats of the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
