Mulling intervenes in tanker drivers row PDF Print

Energy Minister Clive Mullings has intervened in a dispute involving the island's tanker drivers and haulage contractors.

National Workers Union (NWU) Vice President, Granville Vallentine told RJR News the row has been triggered by the failure of several petroleum haulage contractors to fulfil a wage and fringe benefits agreement.   

According to Mr. Valentine the Union could not guarantee normal operations beyond Tuesday. 

He said he has already contacted some of the contending parties in a bid to stave off a strike.

"The issue concerning the haulage contractors and tanker drivers has been one that has dogged the industry for over a number of years, and if necessary we will intervene in the matter to see if we can a resolution to some of these issues," he said.

The representation in terms of the unions have been in contact with and we sincerely hope that this matter will not escalate and that good sense will prevail, but failing that we will we how best we can deal with some of these outstanding issues which over time continue to pop up and continue to be a source of discomfort for the traveling public," he added.
