At least one Senior Magistrate has voiced concerns about Prime Minister Bruce Golding's rhetoric about the release of repeat offenders on bail.
In his presentation of new anti-crime measures on Tuesday, Prime Minister Golding alluded to the large number of accused being released on bail.
He seemingly laid the blame at the feet of some of the country's judges. However, Senior Magistrate, Glen Brown argued that Magistrates are being unfairly blamed. The Magistrate, who was careful in choosing his words, argued that it was unreasonable to blame judges when they are confronted with the types of statements being submitted by the police. During a bail hearing on Thursday, Mr. Brown reminded the court that judges often have to grant bail based on problematic statements submitted by the police. He also believes that the police have been given too much power under the new plan announced by the Prime Minister. |
