The management of the National Water Commission (NWC) Thursday afternoon was moving to stave off strike action by its workers.
The NWC management met today with the National Workers Union (NWU) in a bid to settle an impasse over the company's decision to deduct money from the salaries of a group of employees who stayed of the job for two days last month.
NWU Vice-President Granville Valentine said he is hoping to arrive at a settlement on Friday during a follow-up meeting. Mr. Valentine said the union is willing to negotiate since the company has somewhat agreed that it was wrong.
"We outlined our case quite clearly, the management we met with agreed with us for the most part that the company committed a breach by taking the money then investigated," he said. Mr. Valentine, however, warned that the workers will take industrial action if the money is not reimbursed. It is reported that the workers had stayed off the job for two days last month to protest against the late payment of salaries. Its reported that the salaries were paid late due to cash flow problems. The workers were reportedly informed early about the delay and therefore the NWC was taken by surprise, when some employees at the Marescaux Road office went on strike. The NWC said it decided to make deductions from the salaries since customers were affected. |
