It should be known by the end of September whether
hanging will resume in Jamaica.Prime Minister Golding on Tuesday served notice that there will be a conscience vote on capital punishment when Parliament resumes from the summer break. "The thinking of the government is that this matter should remain on the table of the House during the recess during the month of September. We would wish to have the motion debated and voted on towards the end of September," he said. The Joint Select Committee that was debating Constitutional and Electoral Reform decided that his matter would be put to a conscience vote. The Government has stated that it wants to resume hanging. The previous People's National Party administration had insisted that its efforts to resume hanging were frustrated by rulings issued by the London based Privy Council. |
