Two Ghanian brothers who are accused of being major
players in the sale of pirated DVDs, pleaded guilty to breaches of the
Copyright Act on Tuesday.They are to be sentenced on July 29th. Alassane Aboubakari and his brother Rufai are also charged with breaches of the Immigration Act and face deportation. The two were charged on Friday during a major crack down by the Organised Crime Investigation Division (OCID). The police seized more than 3,000 pirated DVDs and arrested the two Ghanians at their home in Bull Bay, St. Andrew. Six computers, computer monitors and printers used to produce labels were seized in the operation. In recent weeks, OCID has been seizing pirated DVDs and arresting persons selling the bootleg material. Pirated DVDs with the latest blockbuster movies are currently being sold on the streets of downtown Kingston for as low as $70. Persons convicted of selling illegal DVDs face a maximum fine of $100,000 for each movie. |
