Following Thursday night's confirmation by President of the Jamaica Civil Service Association, Wayne Jones, that 10,000 Government workers will benefit from improved payments, the United Union of Jamaica (UUJ) says it will be approaching the government for similar treatment.

UUJ President James Francis told RJR News on Friday morning the Union which represents some categories of government workers is meeting next week with the Ministry of Finance where he hopes the issue will be addressed.

"We will be meeting with the Ministry of Finance come next Wednesday in respect to some other allowances that have not been settled coming out of the MOU negotiations and I would like to use this opportunity to discuss the salary of the rest of public sector workers for some increase in respect to the high cost of gas at this time," said Mr. Francis.

Thursday night President of the National Workers Union, Vincent Morrison, told RJR News it could become necessary for wage contracts in the private sector to be renegotiated due to the record rise in the cost of petrol.

"I really believe that those contracts that were negotiated in early January this year with clauses for travelling officers I think those will have to be looked on now. The real situation is that those arrangements are really worthless at this time," said Mr. Morrison.
