Allegations of unfair pricing practices by local
fertiliser manufacturers are to be discussed by Cabinet. This comes days after Prime Minister Bruce Golding accused manufacturers of price-gouging and threatened to take drastic action if the cost of supplies continued to go up. He ordered the Ministry of Agriculture to conduct an investigation into their pricing policies and present a report this week. Agriculture Minister, Christopher Tufton says the issue is to be discussed by Cabinet on Monday following talks with fertiliser manufacturers. Mr. Golding had lamented that during discussions with Caricom leaders it was discovered that regional countries are importing fertiliser way below the price being charged in Jamaica. Farmers have also been complaining about the sharp increase in the price of fertiliser since the start of the year. Following another upward movement earlier this month the Jamaica Agricultural Society warned consumers to expect an increase in the price of ground produce. The continuing rise has been linked to the increase in the price of corn on the world market. |
