The latest results from the Electoral Office of Jamaica show that the Jamaica Labour Party has won the 2007 General Elections.
In spite of a tight race throughout, the JLP has come off with a marginal lead, but a lead nonetheless. However the People's National Party is not giving up as yet, as in her address to supporters after the JLP was declared the winner, PNP President Portia Simpson Miller did not concede defeat. Mrs. Simpson Miller says she will be keeping a close eye on the confirmations and will actively pursue claims by voters who say they were unable to exercise their franchise because their names were not on the voters' list. She says that if needs be this issue and several others will be taken to the courts The PNP President says that she will not leave Jamaica's future "up to criminals". Mrs. Simpson Miller pointed to what she calls several irregularities that put the results of Monday's polls in limbo. She also announced that she will address the nation on the matter on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the JLP celebrated as it has managed to wrestle PNP stronghold seats like Nothern Clarendon from Health Minister Horace Dalley and incumbent for North West Clarendon Richard Azan. The tooth and nail battle for Western Portland ended with Daryl Vaz taking the seat over the PNP's Abe Dabdoub, 6969 to 6066. The EoJ points out that it has not yet accounted for all the constituencies as the results for four constituencies are still outstanding. Director of Elections, Danville Walker says although official results still hold a 28-28 tie, he says preliminary results show the JLP in the winner's pavillion with 31 seats to the PNP's 29. |
