Guyanese media urged to boycott government events PDF Print
Wednesday, 16 July 2008
Guyana's Press Association has urged its members to boycott certain events in which government officials participate.

The association was responding to a ban announced on Monday on a senior reporter of a private news channel.

TV news reporter Gordon Mosley has been informed by the government that he has been banned from the office of the president.

The administration says this was because of what they described as disparaging and disrespectful remarks.

The Guyana Press Association is still awaiting a response from the administration pointing out what exactly was disparaging and disrespectful in Mr. Mosely's letter to the media.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mosely's managing editor Enrico Wolford described the action as unfortunate and stupid.

Some Caribbean media workers have called the action undemocratic, antiquated and a sign of a crumbling democracy.

However oresident Jagdeo's Public Relations Officer Kwame McKoy said the restrictions placed on Mr. Mosely was a reprimand for unbecoming conduct.
